Our Family’s Thailand Adventure: From Temples to Tropical Islands
Last year, we packed our bags (and a few snacks), hopped on a plane to the other side of the world, and set off on the ultimate family adventure to Thailand! From the buzz of Bangkok to the peaceful rice paddies of the Golden Triangle, we explored temples, zipped through canals, sailed turquoise waters, and soaked up every moment together. We left convinced that Thailand is the perfect family destination.
Here’s a peek at our Thailand itinerary—with our favorite family-friendly highlights and a few “don’t miss this!” moments along the way.
1. Bangkok
Where tuk-tuks whiz by golden temples and the street food is as incredible as everyone says.
Where We Stayed: Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok – The family two-bedroom suite here was Perfect for us—stylish, spacious, and super cozy after a long flight. The hotel’s rooftop views and fun, playful vibe made it a win for both the grown-ups and kids.
Don’t Miss: Our canal cruise with Hidden Bangkok was the absolute highlight! We glided through quiet waterways, past local homes and floating markets—getting a glimpse of the city most visitors never see. It felt like a secret world.
Bonus Tip: The Kimpton’s breakfast is not to be skipped - book with us and it’s included! Also—make time for a visit to Wat Pho (hello, giant reclining Buddha!) and a quick tuk-tuk ride to the flower market at night. It’s magical.
2. Phuket
Beach days, coconut shakes, and island charm with a splash of luxury.
Where We Stayed : COMO Point Yamu – This peaceful, design-forward resort has insane views of Phang Nga Bay and a calm, quiet vibe that felt like a total exhale. Our kids loved the pool (and so did we).
Don’t Miss : Phuket Old Town was such a fun surprise—colorful buildings, cool cafés, and amazing street food. We wandered the Sunday night market and found the best mango sticky rice of the trip.
Bonus Tip : Don’t leave without a sunset by the pool. It's a screensaver in real life.
3. Sailing Adventure – Island Hopping by Catamaran
Turquoise water, hidden coves, and living barefoot for a few days.
This was magic. We chartered a catamaran and set sail through the dreamy Andaman Sea. Each day brought a new island to explore, a secret snorkeling spot, or a beach to ourselves. The kids played pirate, we kayaked at sunrise, and meals on deck under the stars became a new family favorite.
Highlights:
- Bamboo Island – crystal clear and blissfully quiet (if you arrive by catamaran before the crowds…)
- Phi Phi Islands – picture-perfect and fun to explore early before the crowds
- Hong Island – dramatic cliffs and dreamy lagoons and about a million steps to the lookout - but worth it!
- Hidden beaches only reachable by boat—you’ll just have to come find your own!
Bonus Tip : Bring water shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, and lots of curiosity. This part of the trip was pure freedom.
4. Chiang Mai
Temples, street markets, and the perfect mix of calm and culture.
Where We Stayed : Anantara Chiang Mai – Elegant, peaceful, and right on the river. It felt like a little oasis with the bonus of being walkable to the night market!
Don’t Miss :
- The Old City – explore on foot or by tuk-tuk, popping into temples and tiny cafés.
- Chiang Mai’s night markets – a feast for all the senses (and for dinner).
- The Sticky Waterfall (Bua Thong) – the kids climbed a literal waterfall with their bare feet and couldn’t stop talking about it.
Bonus Tip: Sign up for a cooking class! Chiang Mai has amazing ones that welcome kids—and nothing beats making your own pad thai. OUr favorite was Passion cooking school!
5. The Golden Triangle
Jungle bliss, elephants, and the most meaningful moments of our trip.
Where We Stayed : Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort – If Thailand is a dream, this is the dreamy finale. Nestled in the hills where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet, this resort is surrounded by lush jungle—and home to an ethical elephant sanctuary.
Don’t Miss: Waking up to misty views of the Mekong, walking beside rescued elephants in the forest, and learning about their care from compassionate guides. It was humbling, beautiful, and unforgettable.
Bonus Tip: Book the bubble experience for at least one night—sleeping under the stars in the jungle? Yes, please.
Final Thoughts :
Thailand stole our hearts. It was adventurous, meaningful, and surprisingly easy to explore as a family. From street food to sacred spaces, sandy toes to jungle mornings, this trip gave us memories we’ll be talking about for year.
