A Trip I Just Planned: A Father-Son Week in Peru

Peru is one of my favorite trips to plan. I've sent couples, a FRIEND group, and now a father and son, IT’S ONE OF MY TOP recommendATIONS WHEN SOMEONE COMES TO ME AND ISN’T SURE WHERE TO GO BUT IS dreaming of a getaway with real adventure.

This one was a week built around the Sacred Valley, a night at Machu Picchu, and Cusco.

Here's how it came together.

The itinerary

Days 1–3: The Sacred Valley. They flew overnight landing in Cusco first thing in the morning. A driver met them at the airport and took them straight down to the Sacred Valley. Starting lower than Cusco makes adjusting to the altitude much easier. They stayed at Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado, right on the Urubamba River - OUR PREFERRED PARTNER!

Day 4: Machu Picchu. They rode the Belmond Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu - WHICH IS A MUST-DO IN MY OPINION. IT’S A PART OF THE EXPERIENCE AND INCLUDES A DELICIOUS BRUNCH EN ROUTE! AFTER ARRIVAL, THEY toured the citadel that afternoon. Then they spent the night at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel right at the entrance to Machu Picchu!

Day 5: A slow morning at the top. They started the morning with a massage at Sanctuary Lodge, a perk I was able to add through MY PREFERRED partnership, before heading back to Cusco AGAIN ON THE HIRAM BINGHAM! THIS TIME, THE TRAIN RIDE IS MORE OF A PARTY - LIVE MUSIC, DRINKS, AND DINNER ON BOARD.

Days 5–7: Cusco. Two nights at Belmond Hotel Monasterio, a former monastery in the historic center. THEY ENJOYED A CITY TOUR AND A market and cooking experience.

HOW I plan Peru :

Peru takes a lot of moving pieces: domestic flights, trains, guides, altitude, and Machu Picchu tickets that sell out quickly with no notice.

I WORK SIDE BY SIDE WITH A TEAM on the ground, AND YOU HAVE a 24-hour operations line while you travel.

Who this trip is for

  • Parents and grown kids looking for a once-in-a-lifetime trip together

  • Couples who want adventure with real comfort at the end of each day

  • Small groups and milestone trips (it works beautifully for a big birthday)

  • Families with older kids and teens who can handle the altitude and long days

My biggest tip: book early, at least 4-6 months out, because Machu Picchu tickets and the best rooms go first.
