Best Family Vacations from Raleigh-DUrham (RDU)
Triangle Families, Listen Up : These are the Best Family Vacations You Can Book Right from RDU….
I've been planning luxury family travel for a long time, and one of the things I love most about living in the Triangle might be leaving on vacation as often as possible… i’m kidding but seriously settle in, because this is a long one…..
RDU is slowly but steadily becoming an impressive departure point — we have nonstop service to Dublin now (!!), solid direct flights to the coasts, and easy one-stop connections to the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond that are way more manageable than people think.
So if you're a Raleigh, Cary, Durham, or Chapel Hill family sitting on vacation dollars and wondering where to go next — this one's for you. These are the destinations I'm sending Triangle families to right now, and why each one earns its spot on the list.
Costa Rica — Peninsula Papagayo One stop, completely worth it
If there's one destination I'd put on every Triangle family's radar right now, it's Costa Rica. You'll make one quick stop into Liberia's Guanacaste Airport (LIR), and land about 30 minutes from one of the most extraordinary resort communities in Central America. The connection is smooth and the total travel time is very manageable. Don't let it scare you off.
The Four Seasons Papagayo is hands down one of my favorite family properties — two beaches, a renovated kids club, a brand new waterpark park. I can go on but read the full review here. it’s easy from the airport and a total win-win for parents and kids. Plus, we’re a preferred partner so you know you’ll get our amazing perks + vip treatment.
now, if you’re feeling adventurous, i’ll tell you to add on a rainforest stay — it’s about 2-3hrs drive from the airport but absolutely worth it. Nayara tented camp is unlike any other property - luxury glamping with all natural hot springs, and sloths hanging in the trees.. the kids will go crazy! Read about it here.
Best for: Families who want adventure + luxury in equal measure. Kids ages 5 and up.
The Caribbean — Jamaica + The BahamasEasy one stop, big payoff
The Caribbean is one of the most accessible luxury family trip categories from RDU — one easy connection, usually through Miami, Atlanta, or Charlotte, and you're there. Here are the two I'm recommending most right now:
Jamaica → Round Hill Hotel, Montego Bay
Round Hill is the Jamaica I want every luxury family traveler to know about. Tucked on a private peninsula 25 minutes from the Montego Bay airport, it's the kind of place that feels completely removed from the world — in the very best way. The villas (some beautifully decorated by Ralph Lauren himself) range from 2 to 6 bedrooms and include a private housekeeper who comes each morning to make breakfast to order. Yes, to order. In your villa.
For kids, the Pineapple Club (ages 3–6) and 7-Up Club (ages 7–12) both deliver INCREDIBLE programming — reggae lessons, basket weaving, garden tours, pool table, Xbox. The bay is calm and shallow, perfect for young swimmers. The food is exceptional. And the vibe is that specific old-school Caribbean elegance that you genuinely can't find everywhere. Round Hill is timeless and I cannot recommend it enough.
ASK US IN THE INQUIRY ABOUT WHAT ROOMS WOULD WORK BEST FOR YOUR FAMILY AND WE’LL SHARE OUR PARTNER PERKS + PROMOS.
The Bahamas → The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort
Here's the Bahamas take I want to give you, because I think too many families default to the obvious options and miss this one. Yes — Baha Mar and Atlantis are iconic, enormous, and genuinely fun, especially for kids who want waterslides and a million activities. No judgment whatsoever.
But if you want the Bahamas at its most refined and beautiful, the Four Seasons Ocean Club is the answer. It's luxe, quiet, and stunning — formal English gardens, a gorgeous beach, Four Seasons service at its finest. And here's the part that makes it absolutely perfect for families: you get full access to Atlantis. A complimentary shuttle runs between the properties, and you can charge everything directly back to your Ocean Club room. Your kids get the full Atlantis experience. You get to come home to the Four Seasons. Everyone wins. ASK US IF WE HAVE ANY PROMOS!
Best for: Families who want the Caribbean without the chaos, and the Atlantis experience without actually staying there.
Europe — More Accessible from RDU Than You Think
I hear this constantly from Triangle families: "Europe feels like so much with kids." And I get it. But the FLIGHT OPTIONs from RDU are good — and with the new Aer Lingus nonstop to Dublin that launched this spring, WE HAVE CHOICES.
London + The Countryside
This is the trip I recommend more than almost any other for families who want Europe done right. Fly in, go straight to the countryside (Four Seasons Hampshire, Beaverbrook, Heckfield Place), decompress from jet lag at a stunning country estate, then head to London rested and ready. I've written a full guide to this itinerary HERE. It is genuinely magical for kids of all ages.
Paris
Paris with children is REALLY SPECIAL. The Eiffel Tower at night when everyone goes quiet for a moment, a WARM NUTELLA crepe, the Louvre with a private guide so you actually see what matters instead of fighting crowds — it's one of those trips that shapes how a child sees the world. I'm a big believer that Paris is for everyone, especially families who lean into it rather than trying to make it something else.
Dublin
This is the one I'm most excited about right now. Aer Lingus launched nonstop service from RDU to Dublin five times a week this spring, and for Triangle families iT opens up a new world. Ireland for families is SO wonderful — the castles, the cliffs, the warmth of the people, the complete lack of pretension. It's easy to navigate, the pace is gentle, and the kids will talk about the castle hotels and the sheep on the road forever!
Iceland — For the Adventurous Family
Put this one on your list if your family leans adventurous. Iceland is unlike anywhere else on earth — volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls, the Northern Lights, geothermal pools, glaciers, puffin colonies, whale watching. It's the trip for families who want to feel like explorers. Summer is the sweet spot for families with younger kids (endless daylight, milder temps), and the experiences here are completely unlike anything you'll find anywhere in the Caribbean or Europe. It's a short FLIGHT from RDU and the total travel time surprises people — it's closer than it feels on the map.
Best for: Curious, adventurous families. Kids who like science, nature, and feeling like they've been somewhere genuinely extraordinary.
Mexico — With the Right Hotels, It's Exceptional
Mexico from RDU is one of the easiest international family trips you can take. Cancun is sometimes direct depending on the season, and even with a stop the flight time is short enough that it barely registers as a travel day. Here's how I'm currently building Mexico trips for Triangle families:
Grand Velas Riviera Maya — for families who want a true luxury all-inclusive experience. Grand Velas is a cut above the typical resort in every way: the food is excellent (multiple restaurants, no limitations), the kids' club, the pools are gorgeous, and the service is warm and attentive. If an all-inclusive is what your family wants — this is where I'm sending you.
Rosewood Mayakoba or The St. Regis Kanai — for families who want private luxury without the all-inclusive format. Both are extraordinary. Rosewood Mayakoba sits within a stunning PROPERTY of lagoons and mangroves — the boat ride to your room is an experience in itself. The St. Regis Kanai is newer and breathtaking, built alongside a protected mangrove reserve with butler service, spectacular pools, a calm shallow beach that's perfect for little ones, and dining that's SUPER impressive. Both give you a high-touch, elegant experience with great family programming.
Hotel Esencia — this one is for parents who want something completely authentic and utterly beautiful, and DON’T NEED THE structured kids' club. Originally the private home of an Italian duchess, Esencia sits on a 50-acre private jungle estate with a spectacular beach and was just honored with Three Michelin Keys — the only hotel in the Riviera Maya to receive them. It's intimate, peaceful, and gorgeous in the quietest possible way.
Best for: All family types — Mexico has an option for everyone, and it's one of the most accessible luxury family destinations in the world.
Domestic — All Direct from RDU, All Worth It
And sometimes the best family trip doesn't require a passport or a connection. RDU has excellent direct service to some great domestic family destinations, and these are the properties I love most at each one.
San Diego → Hotel del Coronado
The Del is iconic. There is no other word for it. That red-turreted Victorian sitting on the Pacific, the sprawling beach, the festive energy that makes you feel like vacation from the second you arrive — it's one of those American classics that earns every bit of its reputation. And San Diego itself is a perfect family city — the Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado Island by bike. THERE ARE SO MANY ROOM CATEGORIES HERE THAT WORK FOR FAMILIES - SEND US AN INQUIRY AND WE’LL HELP YOU FIND THE RIGHT FIT.
Miami → The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne
Here's a secret about Key Biscayne: it looks like the Caribbean, sounds like the Caribbean, and feels like the Caribbean — and it's 20 minutes from Miami Airport. The water is clear, the sand is soft, the beach is gorgeous. For families who want the tropical beach resort experience without an international flight or a passport, this might be the single best value proposition in the country. And you're still in Miami — world-class dining, Wynwood, the Design District, the beach clubs — all right there if you want it.
Palm Beach → Four Seasons Palm Beach or The Eau
Palm Beach is a dream for families who want something refined and beautiful on the Atlantic coast. The Four Seasons Palm Beach is classic Four Seasons excellence on a beautiful stretch of beach — great pool, great kids' programming, exceptional service. The Eau Palm Beach is a more playful, personality-driven property with gorgeous rooms, a stunning pool scene, and a vibe that feels fun and lively in the very best way. Both are excellent; the choice comes down to whether you want Four Seasons polish or a slightly more spirited energy. Either way — Palm Beach is a beautiful trip, direct from RDU, and one I don't think Triangle families reach for nearly enough.
Boston → Four Seasons Hotel Boston
I love recommending the Four Seasons Boston for families because it delivers experiences that are genuinely memorable for children in ways that go beyond a nice room and a pool. Here's what I mean:
The Vault. On every guest room floor, there's a 24-hour pantry stocked with complimentary snacks, treats, and drinks. Your kids will discover this immediately and visit approximately forty-seven times per day. I promise.
The Scavenger Hunt. Children follow clues left by Willow the Swan, the hotel's resident mascot, through the entire property — from the 8th-floor indoor heated pool overlooking Boston Public Garden to the private sixth-floor garden courtyard. They finish with a handcrafted chocolate swan. It is completely charming.
The Mystery Closet. Behind the front desk is a hidden room that opens with a special key, stocked with toys and trinkets for young guests to choose from on arrival. It sounds like a small thing and it is delightful.
And then there's Boston itself — the Freedom Trail, the duck boats, the Museum of Science, the Aquarium, Fenway if you have baseball lovers, and the absolute magic of a New England fall or a snowy winter weekend in the city. Direct from RDU, and one of the most underrated family city trips in the country.
Chicago → The Langham
The Langham Chicago is one of the most beautiful urban luxury hotels in the US, sitting right on the Chicago River in the heart of the city. For families, it works beautifully: the rooms are spacious, the indoor pool is a serious highlight, and the hotel's location puts you within walking distance of Millennium Park (the Bean!), the Art Institute, Navy Pier, and some of the best deep-dish pizza debates you'll ever have with your children. Chicago is a wonderful family city — bigger than Boston, completely walkable, and full of the kind of culture and food and architecture that makes a trip feel substantial.
If any of these are calling your family's name, I'd love to help you build the trip. From picking the right property to making sure you're getting every perk available through our preferred partner relationships — breakfast included, room upgrades, property credits — I take care of all of it. As a Triangle-based travel advisor, I plan these trips regularly and know exactly how to make them work beautifully from RDU.
